Monday, 30 November 2020 marked Computer Security Day, which seeks to raise awareness of protecting our computers against cyber threats. As computers and technology play an increasingly big role in our work and home lives, it is vital that you know how to keep your hardware and data safe.

With this in mind, we have put together a blog post to showcase why computer security is important and what you can do to minimise online threats.

What is computer security?

Also known as cybersecurity, computer security is the protection of information from theft or damage to the hardware it sits on. Over the years as computers and technology has developed, this can now take on several different forms:

  • Information security: securing information from unauthorised access.
  • Application security: securing an application with security features to prevent cyber threats such as SQL injection, DoS attacks and data breaches.
  • Network security: securing both the software and hardware technologies.
  • Computer security: securing each computer individually, keeping it updated and patched.

Why is computer security important?

One of the most prominent reasons computer security is important is to prevent data theft such as personal and financial information, passwords and confidential documents, as this is something that affects both individuals and businesses.

Hackers may have a variety of different motivations for why they want to breach your computer, but once they have access, they can create further damage by changing program source codes and using photos and emails to create derogatory content. Intruders can also use one computer to gain access and attack other computers, websites or networks, so the scope of a breach could be wide reaching.

Likewise, malicious attackers can create havoc and data loss to use as ransom putting a business or person in a very difficult situation which can lead to further issues with their own clients who then might lose trust in them following a big data breach. This has been known to happen on both a small and wider scale, with even multinational corporations experiencing major data breaches, which only emphasises the importance of implementing safety procedures.

What can you do to avoid cyber threats on your computer?

It can be extremely concerning to hear about the possible security breaches out there and the malicious intent behind them, but there are several different things you can do to keep yourself and your computer safe. Below are our top tips:

  • Remember, you are not immune to cyber attacks.
  • Keep your software up to date.
  • VPNs protect you when using a public Wi-Fi.
  • Use two-factor authentication.
  • Beware of phishing scams (suspicious emails and phone calls).
  • Be careful what you click on.
  • Use strong passwords and update them regularly.
  • Never leave a device unattended.
  • Install antivirus/anti-malware protection and firewall.
  • Back up your data.
  • As a business, invest in your cyber security to avoid bigger losses in the event of a data breach.
